How to Answer ‘Tell Me About Yourself’ in a Job Interview: Tips for a Standout Response

Oct 13, 2026 - 11:00 A.M.

It's one of the most common interview questions, yet "Tell me about yourself" still leaves many candidates fumbling for an answer. Here's how to turn it into a focused, memorable pitch that works in your favor.

Whether you've been working for decades or are new to the job market, one question you can always expect in an interview is "Can you tell me about yourself?" Many people can attest to how often this question trips candidates up.

At first, it can seem open-ended and even intimidating. With no clear structure to guide you, it's tempting to run through your resume in order or drift into a long account of your experiences. But neither approach highlights what makes you a strong candidate.

In case you're curious, interviewers don't want a full life story when they pose this question. And if it's any consolation, there is no single right answer.

"Humans really do want to help other humans, but you need to make it easy for them by filtering your life story through the lens of their needs," Becky Farone, J90, an International Coaching Federation (ICF)-certified career coach, says.

Here's a guide to help you prepare your answer and breeze through it like a pro:

  • Structure it like a story: Walk through how you got here, what you're doing now, and what you want next, giving your answer a clear beginning, middle, and end. You can start with the present and briefly explain how you got there, or move in order from the beginning. Either approach works.
  • Tie it back to the role: When discussing what you want next, be intentional about the skills you hope to build or the environment you're looking for, such as growing in a fast-paced setting where you can sharpen your customer service or problem-solving skills.
  • Keep it focused; you don't need to include everything: Your interviewer already has your resume, cover letter, and likely your LinkedIn profile, so there's no need to include everything. Aim for about 30 to 90 seconds. Running a little longer is fine, but once you pass the two-minute mark, it can start to feel like too much.
  • Keep it fresh and memorable: Add context or highlight something that isn't immediately obvious on paper. Briefly expand on a project, an experience that helped you discover a strength, or something that shaped what you want to do next to make your answer feel more personal.

With a clear structure and a little practice, "Tell me about yourself" can go from a dreaded prompt to one of the strongest moments of your interview. Keep it concise, tie it back to the role, and let your story do the talking.

Once you've nailed your introduction, another curveball may be waiting later in the interview. "What's your greatest weakness?" is one of the most dreaded questions job seekers face, but with an honest, well-prepared answer, it can become a chance to show self-awareness and stand out from the competition.
