Is Your Resume Too Long? Here’s What Hiring Managers Really Want

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick spent years trying to give their son a childhood that wasn't defined by their famous names. But when the couple recently stepped out with their grown-up boy, a few photographs sparked a conversation that went far beyond an ordinary family reunion.
Some people spotted a striking resemblance, while others focused on something entirely different. And behind those unexpected reactions is the story of a mother who once worried about the little boy she would eventually have to let go.

Long before James Wilkie Broderick became a young man attracting attention on red carpets, he was simply a little boy growing up in New York City. His mother was already one of television's biggest stars, but there was something about her own childhood she never wanted to forget.

Parker knew what it was like to grow up without endless money or expensive presents. Her childhood home was nothing like the glamorous apartments fans associated with her famous Sex and the City character, Carrie Bradshaw, and that difference shaped how she wanted to raise her children.

When James arrived in October 2002, Parker and Broderick could afford comforts their own families might once have considered unimaginable. Still, she didn't want her son to grow up believing that every wish should automatically become a purchase.
That belief stayed with her as James grew older. Parker believed children should understand what it takes to earn money, appreciate the things they already have, and learn that wanting something doesn't always mean getting it immediately.

For Parker, providing a good childhood wasn't simply about buying beautiful things. She wanted her children to feel loved and secure while learning that some rewards are sweeter when you've worked for them, even if your parents happen to be famous.
It was a rather different approach from the extravagant celebrity childhood people might imagine. But money wasn't the only thing Parker was careful about, because there was another part of family life she and Matthew couldn't always control.

Back in 2011, Parker was juggling an acting career, a household, and three young children. She and Broderick also had twin daughters, and although they could afford extra help, they wanted to remain involved in the ordinary business of being parents.

Parker explained that the family did not have live-in help. She and Matthew preferred being hands-on, even when schedules, school arrangements, and demanding jobs made every ordinary day feel like a complicated puzzle.

There were mornings when Parker walked James to school and afternoons when she hurried home to see her younger children. She admitted that photographers regularly followed her around New York, but she didn't want to give up the city life her family loved.
And for all the beautiful clothes and movie premieres, she sounded happiest talking about simpler moments. She loved the privacy of having only her husband and children inside the house, with no audience waiting for the next photograph.

But the demands of two acting careers weren't always easy on their children. Parker recalled occasions when both parents were working, explaining that James was old enough to tell them exactly how he felt about their absence.
The family's quieter evenings sounded wonderfully familiar: Parker gave the girls their baths, while Matthew prepared meals that could include homemade sausage and pasta. Yet while his parents were busy trying to balance everything, their eldest child had already begun imagining a future that worried his mother.

James was only eight when he started expressing a serious interest in acting. For a child whose parents had spent much of their lives onstage and in front of cameras, it may have sounded natural, but Parker wasn't ready to encourage him into the business.

She admitted she hoped James would wait until after college before entering the profession. "I don't want him to do it until after he goes to college," she said, expressing a wish that was particularly striking because she had started acting herself at almost the same age.
Parker knew that acting could be thrilling, but she also understood the disappointment, uncertainty, and rejection that came with it. Part of her wondered whether her son might benefit from discovering those realities early, while another part wanted him to enjoy being a child a little longer.

She wasn't declaring that James could never follow in their footsteps. Still, she hoped he would have more time before making such an enormous decision, and the next few years would pass faster than any of them might have imagined.

Like so many parents, Parker watched the years disappear between school mornings, birthday celebrations, and family dinners. The little boy who once needed someone to accompany him through New York's streets was getting closer to the age when he would begin making his own decisions.

Then, in May 2021, James reached a milestone that brought out a particularly emotional side of his mother. As he prepared to finish high school, Parker shared a rare photograph and graduation message that sounded less like a celebrity announcement and more like a mother's private letter.
The photograph showed James from behind, walking away from the camera. Parker wrote about the ending of one chapter and the beginning of another, describing parenthood as "the epic novel that is the story of child and parent."
She admitted that the family felt "proud, weepy" as they looked forward to his graduation. Anyone who has packed away old school uniforms or watched a child leave home might recognize that strange mixture of excitement and sadness, even when the future promises wonderful things.

James was beginning the next part of his life, and Parker could no longer make every choice for him. The boy who once wanted to audition at eight had grown into a young man with new opportunities and an increasingly independent future.

Four years later, he completed his education at Brown University. In 2025, James earned a bachelor's degree in Classics, an academic achievement quite different from what some might expect of two Hollywood stars' son.
After years of watching his father perform, James finally had an opportunity to work alongside him. The two appeared in the television series Elsbeth, turning a childhood fascination into a professional experience they could share.
Matthew could hardly hide his happiness when the father and son worked together for the first time. "I was so proud and happy to work with my son James," he said, while James offered an equally affectionate description of his father: "my favorite actor!"

It wasn't merely a family visit to a television set. Matthew played Lawrence, while James portrayed Carl, giving the younger actor a chance to handle his own role as father and son worked as members of the same cast.
Someone else on the production noticed their relationship, too. Actress Carrie Preston remembered how happy James seemed to be working with his father, and how Matthew's pride in his son was plain to see.

Preston also remarked that James did not appear jaded despite growing up with two famous parents. Her impressions were especially warm, suggesting that his enjoyment of the work was easy to notice, even on a professional set.

For Matthew, the experience offered a chance to work with the boy he had once taken to school. And while audiences were beginning to discover James as an actor, his mother still had a few things to say about the kind of future she wanted for him.
By 2025, Parker's approach to her son's ambitions sounded less protective than it had when he was eight. She explained that she and Matthew offer James advice when he asks for it, rather than deciding every step of his professional journey.
Her wishes extended beyond fame or a successful acting career. She wanted her children to pursue fulfilling work, support themselves, and become adults capable of building lives that suited them, whether or not those lives resembled their parents' careers.

And James was already finding creative opportunities outside projects involving his family. His childhood friend, actor Sam Nivola, recently spoke about their independent film Days Ending in Y, which they made with other young filmmakers in Wales on a tiny budget.
Nivola, who has known James since they were little, called him "an incredible guy and an incredible actor." It was praise from someone who knew James long before his latest red-carpet appearance, but another, much more personal judgment was still waiting to be made.

In August 2026, Parker gave an answer that had little to do with acting awards, fashion, or her decades in entertainment. When reflecting on what mattered most to her, she chose "the family we've created together" with Matthew, placing their life as parents above her many professional achievements.
She also spoke warmly about their three children and how much the family enjoys spending time together. After nearly three decades of marriage, Parker was still talking about the home life she had built with her husband, rather than the glamorous one so many people recognized.

Of course, having adult children means those family moments can become harder to arrange. James had his own studies, work, friends, and interests, and Parker's younger daughters were also growing up with lives increasingly separate from their parents.

Still, the family occasionally reunited for special evenings, and theater remained a shared pleasure. One October night would bring the three of them together again, although the photographs would soon attract attention for reasons that had little to do with the performance.
On October 18, 2026, Parker, 61, and Broderick, 64, attended the opening night of the Broadway revival Other Desert Cities at the Hudson Theatre in New York. The production tells a family story filled with complicated relationships and long-buried secrets, but something away from the stage would soon steal the conversation.
For Parker and Broderick, attending a Broadway opening was hardly unusual. The couple have spent years supporting theater productions, and their appearances together are a familiar sight, although their children are not always alongside them.

Parker arrived looking elegant in black, with the kind of carefully chosen outfit fans have come to expect from the fashion-loving actress. Matthew also dressed for the occasion, and photographers captured the couple during another busy evening in Manhattan.
But they weren't alone, and that was where the familiar scene took a more interesting turn. Their 23-year-old son had joined them, and once photographers captured the family together, people began noticing details that prompted sharply different reactions.

His mother's dark ensemble and his father's gray suit framed the young actor in the middle. After years of seeing James mostly through occasional family appearances, viewers finally had a fresh opportunity to compare the three of them side by side.

Some viewers immediately noticed similarities between James and his mother, particularly in their facial features. Others looked at his father, while a few became fascinated by the way the family stood together and interacted during the photo opportunity.
There was also an older remark from Parker that now seemed rather sweet. Back in 2011, she had described James as "the most like me," although she was talking about his perfectionism and personality rather than his appearance, which made the new comparisons especially striking.

The reactions to the family appearance soon turned into a discussion about who James resembled most. One viewer declared, "Son looks like Jessica," apparently seeing the resemblance immediately.

Another person was charmed by a particularly sweet possibility: even at 23, James might still be holding his father's hand, just as children often do when they're little. "Is he holding hands with his father?? ❤️" the viewer asked, noticing what looked like an affectionate moment between the two.

And that wasn't the only affectionate observation. Another viewer noticed both the resemblance and James's attention to his father, writing, "Looks just like his mom. Sweet how he looks over to his dad."

But other commenters focused less on the family's closeness and more on James's height. One bluntly wrote, "He’s very short," while another observed, "He looks very short.Usually kids are taller than their parents. He is not."

But who says a son has to tower over his parents or inherit some perfect combination of their features? James has his own appearance, his own talents, and a life he is building beyond the famous surname he was born with.
And surely there's something lovely about a grown son still wanting to spend an evening with Mom and Dad. James didn't need to be taller, shorter, or look more like either parent to belong in that family photograph, no matter what strangers decided to say about him.

His father had already spoken proudly about working alongside him, while his mother had spent years expressing her love in much quieter ways. And long before the latest comments appeared, Parker had written a few words that now seem especially touching.
Years before strangers began comparing James's appearance to his parents', Parker watched her teenage son prepare for one of the biggest changes in his young life. As he finished high school and prepared to leave that familiar chapter behind, she wrote him a simple message: "You have earned it."

It wasn't a grand Hollywood speech, and she didn't need a red carpet to express how she felt. She was celebrating the young man James was becoming, knowing that the little boy who once held her hand on the way to school was now ready to walk into his own future.
There would be new experiences, new achievements, and moments when Parker could only watch from the sidelines. But she had already seen something any mother might treasure: her child growing into an adult with dreams, friendships, and a life of his own.

And in her more recent reflections on family life, Parker shared another thought that felt especially fitting: "We are happiest when we know we can be together." After so many years of school runs, work commitments, graduations, and growing up, those words carried a warmth that no carefully arranged photograph could quite replace.

That October evening in New York was another opportunity for Parker and Broderick to stand beside the son they had watched grow from a little boy into a young man. The internet could argue all it wanted about his height or whose face he had inherited, but there was one thing no stranger's comment could change: James was still their boy, and they were together again.
