Instagram-worthy Amalfi Coast photo spots

1. Spiaggia Grande, Positano

Twirling between colorful lounge chairs at Spiaggia Grande beach in Positano, one of the best Amalfi Coast photo spots

Spiaggia Grande is the main beach in the town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast. This rocky beach is lined with bright turquoise and orange chairs and tie-dye blue umbrellas that are sure to make your photos pop!

Not only that, but this spot offers the cliffside homes of Positano as the picture-perfect backdrop. Certainly this is one of the quintessential photos to capture!

Photo tips:

  • Take photos here before the beach club opens, which I believe is around 8 am. Since this part of the beach is private, if you come to this spot during opening hours you’ll have to pay for a chair & umbrella in order to snap your photos.
  • Shoot at sunrise in order to have the best lighting and have the beach to yourself.
  • The GPS coordinates for this place are 40.627477, 14.488128

Note: on the same beach closer to the cliffside you can get shots without the chairs in them in order to switch it up. This spot is particularly gorgeous at sundown when all of the lights of the town start to sparkle!

2. Franco’s Bar, Positano

View from Franco's Bar overlooking Positano, Italy

Certainly Franco’s Bar in Positano has one of the best views in town. This popular spot overlooks the Positano cliffside, the marina, and the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea. The drinks are a little pricey, but you’re really paying for the incredible atmosphere.

Photo tips:

  • Franco’s Bar opens daily at 5:30 pm (even though on Google it says 5 pm) and you’ll have to buy a drink in order to take photos here.
  • This bar is quite popular, so get in line by 4:45 pm in order to snag a table with a view.
  • If you don’t get a table in the front, don’t worry. There is a spot in the back right of the bar where you can get a shot next to the glass (the same shot as above) if you just squeeze behind the last table.

3. Le Sirenuse, Positano

Next door to Franco’s Bar is Le Sirenuse, which is one of the most luxurious hotels in Positano. On the balcony of the lobby you’ll find views similar to Franco’s but with an even better view of the cliffside homes and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta tiled dome.

Photo tips:

  • Enter through the front entrance of Le Sirenuse and the balcony is straight ahead through the lobby.
  • If you’re a hotel guest or have a reservation at Ristorante La Sponda, the world is your oyster when it comes to this balcony – take all the shots you want!
  • And if you’re not a guest, like us, getting to this spot is a little trickier. We found that whether or not you can access the balcony depends on who is working that day, how busy it is and what time of day you visit.
  • The best chance you have is to just walk in, act like you belong, get your shot quickly and get out. In case they don’t let you in, come back at a different time of the day or just proceed to Franco’s or #4 below!

4. Positano viewpoint

Gorgeous sunset view over the town of Positano

We stumbled upon this viewpoint while looking for a restaurant and it became our favorite viewpoint in Positano. I mean, just look at this sunset!

This vantage is unique because you can see the massive coastal cliffs beyond Positano, which really leaves you in awe of how this cliffside village came to be. Not only that, but it also provides a view of the colorful beach chairs of Spiaggia Grande and the marina. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful Amalfi Coast photo spots.

Photo tips:

  • You can get a shot here any time of day since it’s not too busy, however sunset is a magical time to witness here.
  • This viewpoint doesn’t have an official name, but it’s on Via Cristoforo Colombo past Franco’s Bar and the GPS coordinates are 40.628000, 14.489583.

5. Balcony of an Amalfi Coast Hotel

We absolutely love staying in places where we roll out of bed and have a great view. Because Positano has quite a few accommodations that offer balconies with incredible views, booking one of these places allows you to effortlessly get that picture perfect shot!

6. Boating on the sea

One of the best Amalfi Coast photo spots is definitely on a boat. With the deep blue color of the Mediterranean, the beautiful and diverse coastal views, and boats that feel like they were made for Instagram, getting a picture while cruising the sea is a must.

Photo tips:

  • We booked our boat through Positano Boats and it departed from Positano.
  • There are many photo opportunities aboard the boat including looking back on Positano, cruising the open sea, entering grottos, aerial drone shots, etc.
  • Make sure to tell your skipper that you want to take photos. This way you can set expectations and he knows when to stop the boat and can help point out the best spots.
  • Even when the boat is stopped, it can be challenging to take a shot due to the wake from other ships. Be patient and jump on any photo opportunity when the water seems most still.
  • Most boats won’t depart until 9:30 or 10 am and return around 5:30 or 6 pm, so shadows may be harsh. Again, communicate with your skipper if there is an angle that you’re trying to get for lighting or for backdrop.

7. Ferry Views

If a private boat isn’t in the budget or plans, don’t worry! You can get some of the most iconic Amalfi Coast pictures from the ferries. Ferries run between many of the towns as well as the Isle of Capri, and the ride offers great views of the coast for a fraction of the cost.

Photo tips:

  • For the best photos, grab a spot outside either on the first floor balcony or the top deck of the ferry.
  • Pay attention to what side of the ferry you’re sitting on based on what direction you’re going. If you’re taking the ferry from Capri to Amalfi, for example, make sure to sit on the left side of the boat for the best views of the coast. On the way back, snag a spot on the right.

8. Faraglioni, Capri

Faraglioni rock formations off the coast of Capri, one of the Amalfi Coast's best photo spots

Faraglioni is the dramatic scene of three distinct rock formations rising out of the sea off the coast of Capri. While this sight is even more breathtaking in person, it’s a must-have photo from the Amalfi Coast.

Photo tips:

  • You’ll find Faraglioni en route to the island of Capri, so be on the look out.
  • If you’re in a smaller boat (not a ferry), chances are you’ll go through the passageway of the middle rock. Be sure to have your camera ready and quickly snap a shot as you go through!

9. Top of Anacapri, Capri

View of Capri and the sea from the top of Anacapri

Seeing the Island of Capri is a must when visiting the Amalfi Coast. From the top of Anacapri there are sweeping views of the island, a unique aerial vantage of all of the boats and the gorgeous blue Mediterranean as far as the eye can see.

Photo tips:

  • To get to this view, take the chair lift from Anacapri. It costs 12 euro round trip.
  • You’ll see viewing areas as soon as you get off the chairlift where people will undoubtedly be taking photos. To get the best shot with yourself in it, have the person taking the photo stand on the higher viewing area and place the subject on the lower one (it will make sense once you’re there!).

10. La Canzone Del Mare Beach club, Capri

The adorable La Canzone Del Mare beach club on the Island of Capri is just screaming to be photographed. With crystal clear water and Faraglioni in the distance, this place is the perfect spot to snap a pic.

Photo tips:

  • For the best angle of this shot, take the photo from the outdoor dining patio of La Canzone del Mare restaurant.

11. Villa Cimbrone Gardens, Ravello

The Villa Cimbrone Gardens are located in the small town of Ravello on the Amalfi Coast. There are many picturesque garden exhibits here, but the best photo spot has to be the Terrace of Infinity. On the terrace you’ll find beautiful sculptures along with seemingly infinite views of the coast and sea.

Photo tips:

  • Once you arrive in Ravello, there are signs throughout the town the will guide you to Villa Cimbrone.
  • Tickets to the Villa Cimbrone Gardens are 12 euro
  • With so many exhibits to see, people move in and out of the terrace frequently. If you are just patient for a few minutes there will be a break in the action to get your shot alone.

12. Ravello panoramic Amalfi Coast photo spot

The town of Ravello above Amalfi has a great vantage from higher up on the cliff which provides panoramic views continuing down the coastline.

Photo tips:

  • This viewpoint is called “Panorama Amalfi Coast” and the GPS coordinates are 40.649284, 14.613418.
  • If you take the bus up from Amalfi to Ravello, this viewpoint is right by the Ravello bus stop.

13. Amalfi Marina Grande Beach

There is something so striking and aesthetically pleasing about the uniform and colorful umbrellas on the Amalfi Coast beaches. Though the beach is pretty small, the teal and yellow umbrellas on the Amalfi Marina Grande beach are begging to be photographed.

Photo tips:

  • This beach is located in the town of Amalfi, very close to the ferry terminal and marina.
  • For the best shot of this beach, take it from the walkway. The GPS coordinates are 40.633243, 14.602859.

14. Path of the Gods

Coastal views from the Path of the Gods hike on the Amalfi Coast

The Path of the Gods is a trail from the town of Nocelle (above Positano) to Bomerano that offers striking views throughout the whole hike. The scenes from this trek are definitely one of the best Amalfi Coast photo spots.

Photo tips:

  • Do this hike early in the day to avoid the crowds and heat.
  • Whatever direction you start with, take photos on the way there. Since it’s a round-trip hike this allows you to take photos before you’re too sweaty and then enjoy the return hike camera-free.

Other notable Amalfi Coast photo spots

Cliffside homes in Positano

Unfortunately we just couldn’t fit every photo-worthy spot into our five day itinerary. That said, here are a few other noteworthy spots that caught our attention on Instagram.

  • Fiordo di Furore – this spot is so gorgeous and we can’t believe we didn’t make it there! We’re in love with this photo @your_passport shot there and would love to capture it for ourselves one day.
  • Capri Funicular viewpoint – apparently you can get an adorable shot like this one by @findlovetravel by the funicular at Capri’s city center. Just take the funicular up once you arrive at Marina Grande.
  • Swimming in Positano – the shot (like this one by @haylsa) from the sea looking back on Positano is so cute! Just be sure to protect your camera gear if you bring it in the water.
