Broken Beach, Nusa Penida - must know tips before visiting Pasih Uug beach!

Broken Beach in Nusa Penida (called “Pasih Uug” by Bali locals) is certainly one of the most beautiful spots on this Indonesian island! It is most famous for the large naturally-made cove and perfectly arched rock formation that allows the waves to flow in and out of the ocean.

Broken Beach is such a unique spot that’s rich in both history and natural beauty, so it’s definitely one of the top things to do in Nusa Penida. Here’s everything you need to know before you go!

Where is Broken Beach Nusa Penida?

Broken Beach is located on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island, which is about an hour off the coast of Bali. It’s also near Angel’s Billabong and on the same side of the island as Kelingking Beach.

What to expect at Broken Beach

Walk to Broken Beach

If you park at Warung Angel Billabong, you will start your adventure here walking down some rocky stairs for about 5 minutes until you arrive at the famous Angel Billabong.

After you admire and enjoy Angel’s Billabong, you keep walking another 5 minutes until you reach Broken Beach. The path is very noticeable, so if you just keep following it along the coastline you can’t miss Broken Beach.

Trek around Broken Beach

Once you come up on Broken Beach you will reach an edge where you can look down into the amazing cove and admire the famous rock arch. If you’re anything like us you’ll stop for 5 minutes mesmerized by the crashing waves in the hole and water so blue that it looks fake!

Cove and surrounding coastline of Broken Beach

From here you can take a walk along the entire perimeter of the natural pool, and even trek over the arch before completing your loop. The entire loop takes around 10 minutes, so it’s suitable for all fitness levels. While there is not an abundance of the typical beach activities here like swimming or snorkeling, admiring the beauty is the main attraction.

Along the walk there are many beautiful spots where you can get photos of the cove, archway and ocean beyond. Do note, though, that there are no rails or safety nets so be careful getting close to the edge! There are also many warungs (restaurants) along the path if you want to get a bite to eat or drink.

On the side of the loop directly opposite from where you entered, you can go off-trail and walk a bit further along the coastline. These spots are great opportunities to escape the crowds and admire the powerful waves of this area. You can also try and spot manta rays from this cliffside view!

All-in-all plan to spend 40-60 minutes at Broken Beach in Nusa Penida, which is certainly enough time to take in the beauty and finish your trek along the perimeter.

Can you swim at Broken Beach Nusa Penida?

No, you cannot swim at Broken Beach because there is no way to access the beach. You can only admire the beach that resides within the cove from the viewing area above.

How to get to Broken Beach Nusa Penida

Hiring a driver for the day is the best way to get to Broken Beach in Nusa Penida. Because Nusa Penida roads are notoriously horrible, we would not recommend renting a scooter and driving yourself around the island.

Even though Broken Beach is on the western side of Nusa Penida and looks close to the main harbor, it still takes an hour to get to from the dock because of the roads. The drive time to Broken Beach from your accommodation will of course depend on which part of the island you’re staying on.

We ended up paying $50 USD for our driver to take us around the west coast of Nusa Penida for the day. The tour included rides to/from our hotel, all parking and entrance fees, and transportation to Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Kelingking Beach and Crystal Bay.

Broken Beach Nusa Penida Entrance Fee

It costs 5,000 IDR ($0.36) for combined entrance to both Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong on Nusa Penida. Like most attractions on the island, the fee is cash only and should be paid in IDR (Indonesian Rupiah).

Broken Beach Opening Hours

Broken Beach is open 24 hours a day. However, it is best to visit in the daylight hours to fully admire the beauty of this place.

Best time to visit Broken Beach

The best time to visit Broken Beach in Nusa Penida is before 10 am because it allows you to beat both the crowds and heat. After 10 am all of the tours start to flood the area and it can detract from the natural beauty and tranquil vibe. The crowds seem to die down again after 4 pm, so that could also be a good time to visit.

What to bring

  • Certainly don’t forget your camera (check out the photography gear we travel with!)
  • Indonesian Rupiah because the entrance and parking fees are cash only.
  • Hat, sunscreen & plenty of water

Where to park

You can park in front of Warung Angel Billabong Sunset Point for 5,000 IDR. The parking fee should be included in your tour if you hire a driver. After parking here you can access both Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong.

Broken Beach Review – is it worth visiting?

Yes, Broken Beach in Nusa Penida is certainly worth a visit! Even though there are not an abundance of beach activities here, seeing this feat of nature first-hand is amazing.

Places near Broken Beach Nusa Penida

Angel’s Billabong is just around the corner from Broken Beach. The famous T-Rex beach, Kelingking beach, and the Crystal Bay sunset spot are both also on this (west) side of Nusa Penida island. You can certainly combine all of these in the one day of your Nusa Penida itinerary.

Where to stay on Nusa Penida

Bungalows and pool at the Dagan Bunalow, our recommendation for where to stay on Nusa Penida

We absolutely loved staying at The Dagan Bungalow while we were on Nusa Penida. This spot is family-run and both the rooms and property are beautiful! It’s a great low-mid budget stay on the island.
